Complementarity of the partners

In short, the proposed work could not be accomplished on a timely basis by either laboratory alone. Together, these five teams have the required skills and experiences of collaborations to successfully complete this project.

LBT provides expertise in the study of biological macromolecules and their interactions. Leveraging LBT's sound experience in computer simulations, full advantage will be taken of the developments targeted in this project. LBT is also actively collaborating with renowned physics and biology laboratories studying nano-objects and exciting applications are included in ExaViz. The CEMHTI extends the domain of applications of the intrinsically multidisciplinary ExaViz platform to Materials Science. It brings the highly complementary point of view of developers of codes (DMfit) dedicated to experimentalists and of end-users with expertises in the combined use of NMR experimental spectroscopy and numerical simulations (ab initio calculations, and prediction of advanced NMR experiments). Such expertises will be crucial to the integration of innovative and user-friendly feedbacks between experimental techniques (of which NMR is just one of many possible examples) and numerical approaches.


LIFO and Moais have built a long term successful collaboration leading to the development of the open source middleware FlowVR. They both have a strong experience at the cross-road between parallel computing, virtual reality and scientific visualization. Moais and LIFO collaborated for several projects in addition to FvNano (RNTL project Geobench, ANR MDA Dalia), and have since maintained sustained collaborations. LIFO have developed an expertise on interaction techniques and high level workflow specifications for scientific visualization, while Moais is more focused on parallel 3D data structures and algorithms, scheduling and high performance rendering. The LIMSI brings an expertise on multi-modal and 3D interactions, and immersive environments.

Finally the partners manage different experimental platforms (EVE, MIRev, GrImage, Digitalis) that will enable to validate ExaViz developments on various configurations. The Digitalis and Grimage platforms at Grenoble and the platform MIReV at Orléans have been interconnected in 2010 through a dedicated high speed internet connection using the Grid’5000 infrastructure. This coupled platform will enable testing the ExaViz framework in a long distance, possibly collaborative configuration.
